At GALLON — A Realm Beyond Music
by Seiki Yukimoto (Seiki Yukimoto & Soulbleed)
Music, at times, chooses its own place.
To become more than just organized sound—
to touch the soul, to transport the listener to another dimension—
it requires a vessel.
The jazz club called GALLON, where we stepped in to perform,
was precisely such a vessel—
an aural chalice that holds not only sound, but spirit.
This is no ordinary jazz club.
Its walls and ceilings are steeped in the echoes of countless performances—
Ron Carter, Christian McBride, NANIWA EXPRESS, and more—
resonating like memories from a previous life.
Here, music, prayer, and screams,
too delicate to be heard,
have seeped silently into the air.
It was in this space that I encountered pianist Shinji Akita’s solo performance.
The moment his fingers touched the keys,
the atmosphere shifted.
Melodies emerged, embracing the silences like brushstrokes in an ink painting.
A single note blooming in the stillness,
and the pauses between sounds became sculptures of time.
It was no longer just music—
it was a poem in resonance.
Each of his notes was a question,
a memory,
a prayer.
In that silence,
the listener’s inner voice was gently awakened.
In contrast, the sound of Soulbleed—our band—
is a chain of raw, pulsing life.
Beats rise like flames,
improvisations burst like sparks,
and rhythms from every corner of the world entwine in a fierce, living dance.
This is a sonic chain reaction,
a music that can only be born here and now.
The seeds we scattered took unexpected root in the soil of GALLON,
grew,
danced,
and ignited.
If Akita’s sound is a doorway to the universe within,
then Soulbleed is a sacred rite that shakes the earth below.
When these two forces resonate in the same space,
GALLON transcends the category of “club”—
it becomes a realm beyond music.
And we must not forget the sonic alchemy of the space itself.
Its clarity is tempered by warmth,
its resonance allows even the spaces between sounds to shine.
From minimalist solo piano to the thunder of electric instrumentation,
GALLON amplifies both serenity and ecstasy with equal grace.
GALLON.
For performers, it is a proving ground.
For listeners, a border-crossing.
And the sounds born here—
they will float, forever, in the air.
Because this place holds a depth
worthy of such belief.
