BIO
SEIKI YUKIMOTO
SOULBLEED
Seiki “Yuki” Yukimoto is an internationally acclaimed trumpet and Andean bamboo flute player, composer and band leader with a stellar 40 years career that includes hundreds of sold out shows as well as multiple collaborations with prominent musicians. He is the leader and founder of the blistering band Seiki Yukimoto & Soulbleed, and is known for his powerful highly improvised sets in a style that pushes the boundaries of jazz. Mr. Yukimoto often counterbalances the band’s energetic sound with his sensual and entrancing quena playing, delighting his listeners.
Mr. Yukimoto’s style is heavily influenced by his early years on St. Mark’s Place in the 1980s living with his mentor, teacher, roommate and eventually his bandleader, the trumpeter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Don Cherry.
Despite moving back to Japan, Mr Yukimoto kept in touch with the downtown jazz community returning to New York frequently to collaborate with other musicians.
For his US based band, Seiki Yukimoto and Soulbleed East Meets West, Mr Yukimoto assembled a group of famous jazz legends. The Amsterdam News described the band’s 2024 concert at NUBLU “as creating a whirlwind of music where all of their individual personalities intermingled.”
Mr. Yukimoto has recorded four live critically acclaimed albums of original music including Exodus from Jazzyland (2014), Where We Were (2017), The Echoes of New York City (2019), and the double album Six Sense Live (2021) which also includes a video. He appears in the the movie Chasing Train and starred in the Japanese film made by a Swiss director living Japan, Der Deutsche, for which he also improvised the music. Most recently, Mr. Yukimoto extemporaneously performed music for and is featured in a film about Don Cherry (in progress). Currently he is at work on a new recording of his live performances.

BY Ronald E. Scott | October 2024
“With only a sound check, no rehearsal, and a few collaborative notations with Yukimoto, the group jumped right into a deep whirlwind of blistering music. It was an evening of genre cross pollination. They played off each other with an intuitive sense allowing for hard-hittin’ solos with Spaceman bringing the guitar funk, Abreu’s Latin tinge, Burrs’ R&B keyboards with Banks soul á la mode, Haynes bringing it home with lyrical melodic inserts, Baker’s wash board improvisations, and the leader playing bold trumpet riffs and yet something new on his Quena flute bridging the sound of East and West.”
